Punkin Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department
The Department and our history
The Punkin-Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department is a non-profit organization established in 1972. Serving 121 square miles of San Jacinto County, located on SH-150. Our volunteer staff provides Fire Prevention, Fire Protection, and Basic life support (BLS) First Responder Services.
Oliver Ellisor founded the Punkin Evergreen Fire Department in 1972. He bought and paid for a fire truck himself, an old 1949 truck from the Huntsville Fire Department. He kept it at our store, Ellisor’s Superette, which is now Nixon’s. It was a one-man fire department for several years. Oliver was killed at the store in 1975.
In 1976, Tina Williams gave a 100-year lease for some land for a building.
JT Ellisor, Donald Cox, Gilbert Everett, and Julia Ellisor went to work and built the building with help from the community and members. These four people went to the Bank of San Jacinto, signed a note, and bought a new fire truck.
With a lot of help from the community bake sales, trail rides, car washes, and anything we could do to raise money, and the help of great Fire Chief Luke Simms. The fire department was a success.
